Drawing and Painting Studio Class!
Ages 8-13 | 50min | $18/week | Beginner & Intermediate
Tuesdays 3pm Pacific / 6pm Eastern ✨ Ongoing, Join anytime ✨
In our friendly, project-based class, young artists create a new work each week from a wide range of subjects, guided step-by-step by a professional artist-mentor. Students will learn and practice the fundamentals of drawing, painting, color, light and design while having fun with other creative kids!
✨ WHAT YOU GET ✨
• Proven Drawing & Painting Skills: We use targeted practice to break down the mechanics of complex and difficult art skills into achievable steps to make cool, interesting, fun artwork each week.
• Individual Feedback Every week: We regularly check in during class, and students are encouraged on their specific ideas, choices and progress every week, while getting specific feedback on how to improve. We make trying again just part of the process, building resilience and confidence for critical feedback without overwhelming students. No one is forced to share or even talk in our classes, but we have found that many like to, and many become more comfortable with interaction at their own pace!
• Learn to SEE like an artist: Concrete observational skills for constructing shapes and adding detail, color and dimension! Over time students learn how shape, line and form can be found even in the most complicated references.
• Wide Scope: Explore a variety of styles and tools each week that build visual vocabulary: drawing techniques, smudging, blending colored pencils, line weight, brushes and brush technique, color palettes, washes, so many styles, lighting, shadow, shading, perspective, foreshortening, texture and more. Each week is different, and provides a steady practice that builds over time into confidence and trusted intuition! We will draw and paint everything from animals, botanicals, landscapes and people to favorite characters and backgrounds in books, cartoons, comics, video games and movies!
• Confidence & Intuition: Artists are encouraged to experiment, problem-solve, make decisions and learn to trust themselves by persevering through failures and disappointments through to success!
• Voice: We teach young artists how to find and follow their delight, interests and curiosities, how to find perspective, fix and break proportions and experiment with color choices, depth and mood, so they can find their voice, learning to put themselves into their art.
• Fun, Delight, Satisfaction: We learn to follow our curiosity and not get too attached, while naming and taking accountability for our longterm goals to create motivation and followthrough. Our teaching style will have even your most reluctant or perfectionist young artist excited to dive in again and again!
• Creative Community: Our young artists tend to stay for years, building connections and friendships with other creative kids over what we love and struggle with in the art process!

✨ EXPERIENCE LEVEL ✨
This class is suitable for beginners and intermediate students who can follow along step-by-step with the teacher. Intermediate artists can begin to add more modifications and detail and move faster to stylize as their skill level and confidence build! *Note: Young artists often move out of a beginner level subject-by-subject. So someone who might be intermediate at drawing and painting wolves and dogs, likely is still beginner at a variety of other subjects like perspective backgrounds or people. Our class intentionally changes the subject type, style and technique emphasis every week so that every student will have a mix of more challenging subjects with more familiar requested subjects! Our aim is to keep this really fun and satisfaction-oriented so engagement in learning hard and complex skills stays high and motivation to keep widening skills gets activated!
✨ GROWTH MINDSET ✨
In our classes, we are building a multi-layered scaffolding of the love of learning that is rooted in the idea that we can find inspiration every day to start again right where we are, finding satisfaction and pride in seeing our progress! Learners who stick with our classes over time come to believe that experimenting, problem solving, setbacks, re-trying and breakthroughs among the support, kindness and inspiration of peers and qualified mentors leads to more flexibility, innovation, courage and self-confidence in not only their art skills, but in all other areas of life! And we have a lot of fun doing it!
✨ We focus on learning and process—most classes will not end with a “finished” piece. Instead, students will build and practice the tools and techniques needed to continue with the piece between classes!
✨ We teach learners how to find joy and delight in their practice, which motivates them to do it more.
✨ You can join anytime, take weeks off, and watch class recordings. Every week is a different project so popping in is great too!
✨ During sharing time, mics are allowed to be kept on. During draw-along, learners are encouraged to ask for feedback and ask questions out loud or in the chat. If a learner has background noise, they will be asked to keep their mic muted when not speaking.
✨This is an inclusive, brave space where everyone can feel empowered to be themselves and create art that reflects the world they dream about while respecting others! • Bring your ideas and an open mind! • Classes may run up to ten minutes late depending on sharing, questions and discussion.

On the day that you enroll, you will be charged your choice of monthly or weekly enrollment fee. Your payments will then be moved to Sundays consistently, to pay for the following week’s class. (Example: You enroll on a Thursday for a Tuesday class—> You are charged right away for the next Tuesday’s class, then you won’t be charged again until the following Sunday, for the next Tuesday’s class.
For scheduled no-class days, you will not be charged the Sunday before that scheduled off day.
-
All classes are recorded and you will have access to the recordings for 3 months, so your young artist can watch and re-watch to practice more!
You can request a refund, and I am happy to skip your next week’s payment, so that you are not charged for a week.
If you know you will miss a class, you can let me know ahead of time at youngillustratorsstudio@gmail.com, and I will plan to alter your next payment(s) to skip the number of weeks you will be gone.
If you would like to make a different payment plan, like paying in one-time chunks for ESA and Charter payments, we can set it up how it works best for you! Please email me at youngillustratorsstudio@gmail.com
✨ MATERIALS✨
Have the following materials ready each week. These can be used for every project, even if you don’t have the exact materials I am using:
• Pencil
• Eraser
• Pencil Sharpener
• Acrylic or Acrylic Gouache Paint set
• Paint Brushes in a couple different sizes and shapes
• Thick Paper - Mixed Media or card stock (thicker than printer paper—though printer paper is fine for drawing, it’s not great for paints or inks and we’ll often use multiple mediums)
• Paper plate or other surface to mix paints
• Cup of water and rag/paper towel
The following materials are recommended to have on hand each week, as it will make your child’s experience more enriched over time. It’s helpful to have a box, bin or cart to keep all class supplies in one place and ready to set up a mini-studio each week! You can build up to having these things—your child will see me using them (and more) and hear me talk about taking care of them, and may begin to see them as useful. Depending on their age you could have them save up for part of it\use this in continuing conversations about prioritizing needs vs. wants, and financial responsibility!:
• Kneaded eraser
• Pencil set (2H, HB, 4B, 6B, 8B)
• Variety of ink pens/markers
• Watercolor paint set
• Colored Pencils
• Regular wax Crayons
• Printer paper for creating their own collage papers
• Glue stick
• Scissors
